The hallmark of Hughes’ game is world class skating ability, skill, and creativity. Jack is one of the best skaters that has come through the Draft in the past decade, and he uses his skating ability to gain an edge on defenders with regularity. Though his top speed isn’t quite at the level of McDavid or MacKinnon, I’d argue Jack could be the quickest player on his edges in the NHL as early as the 2019-20 season, as it’s his edgework and quick cuts that allow Jack to bring a level of explosiveness and elusiveness to his game. Hughes also owns world-class hands that allow him to handle the puck as quick as his feet can move, as he’s consistently able to change angles on both defenders and goalies in order to create opportunities. Remarkable vision and among the best passers in the draft, which makes him a major threat on the powerplay.

What makes Kakko so impressive for a player his age is the amount of maturity in his game, in terms of both physicality and decision making. During his time with TPS and at the World Championships with Finland, he proved he can not only hold his own against men, but dominate in terms of physicality and puck protection as he’s consistently able to impose his will on opposing defenders in order to create offense for both himself and his teammates. In addition to a dominant physical game, Kakko possesses elite skill and hands as he’s able to finish plays in tight and think creatively, though he has the awareness and smarts to not force plays and is able to prolong offensive-zone possessions for extended periods of time. Though he can be an excellent playmaker with gifted passing ability, Kakko fancies himself a goal scorer and will make his living terrorizing netminders and defenders down low and in front of the net with slick stickhandling ability and a dominant physical presence.

What makes Podkolzin so special is a high-end blend of elite skill and competitiveness. Podkolzin is a gifted puck handler, as he’s regularly able to make flashy plays with hands in full stride in order to beat defenders and create scoring opportunities. His skating stride is a little choppy, but in spite of that Podkolzin is still able to gain good speed. With a motor that never seems to stop running, Podkolzin loves to drive in on defenders and drive the net, as he’s entirely unafraid to get his nose dirty in order to create and finish scoring opportunities. Podkolzin’s skill set and demeanor results in a player that’s able to be a scoring threat at all times, as in addition to a potent rush game and a willingness to drive the net, Podkolzin possesses a great wrist shot and can regularly beat goaltenders from far out with a well-placed shot.
4. Bowen Byram, D, Vancouver (WHL)

What sets Byram apart from his peers is his combination of skill, offensive awareness, and mobility on the blue line that allows him to control the game, one shift at a time. He defends well as he’s able to effectively close gaps with his skating ability, and upon retrieving the puck he’s always looking to transition to offense as soon as possible. Byram is a gifted passer and puck handler, but also owns a great first step and is able to skate the puck out of trouble on his own and join the rush with ease. Occasionally he’s guilty of flying the zone too early or showing lackadaisical effort in his own zone, but it’s his abilities on the offensive side of the puck that makes him an elite prospect. Byram is very creative with the puck on his stick and has the ability to make skilled plays in order to generate offense for both himself and his teammates. Always a scoring threat, as he owns both a heavy and accurate shot from the point while also showing the willingness to drive in deep for scoring opportunities.

Turcotte is a versatile forward whose offensive game revolves around relentless pressure. Turcotte is among the best skaters in this draft class, as his acceleration, agility, and top speed are all top notch, which in combination with his world-class compete level makes him a handful on the forecheck for opposing defenders. An intelligent two-way player and can strip puck carriers with ease, which allows him and his unit to transition quickly from defense to offense. Turcotte can attack in the offensive zone in multiple ways, as he possesses high-end skill and has the ability to make flashy plays on defenders or make quick plays with his hands in tight on netminders, while also having the willingness and ability to drive in on defenders and play a gritty grinding style of play. Turcotte’s shot is roughly above average, as he has the ability to occasionally pick corners on netminders and score from outside, however, he’ll make his living scoring below the dots and in front of the net in bushels.
6. Trevor Zegras, C/LW, USA U-18 (USDP)

Zegras is a dominant playmaker in large part due to his world-class brain, as his ability to process the play in the offensive zone is nearly unparalleled in this draft class. His vision is top notch; Zegras can regularly find players through the seam or in the slot while operating on the half-wall on the powerplay, and occasionally he has the ability to make the high-end flashy plays to find teammates. Zegras’ skill level isn’t elite, but it is very good as he has the ability to dangle on defenders, and at the U18’s I sensed more of a willingness to try to create with his hands than in the past. Not a blazer, though I sense his tendency to slow the game down is more of a stylistic preference in order to allow more time to find seams with his vision, as he seems more than capable of pushing the pace of play when it suits him. A little light for his 6’0” frame, but is willing to engage physically at times.
7. Kirby Dach, C, Saskatoon (WHL)

What has always made Dach such a tantalizing prospect is his blend of high-end puck skills, vision, size, and strength, which gives him a lot of tools and options to make an offensive impact on a game. Dach skates very well for a player his size, as his smooth skating stride is not reminiscent of someone who is 6’4” and this allows him to move around the ice with remarkable ease. He’s strong on the puck and is hard to win board battles against on the cycle, which allows him to prolong offensive zone possessions for his team with regularity. However, the true selling point of Dach’s game is his vision and puck skills. Dach is among the draft’s premier playmakers, as his ability to see the play and deliver the puck into precise areas is excellent. Dach has the ability to make high-end skill plays, as he can be flashy and beat defenders with quick dekes in tight or protect the puck to beat defenders wide, which is a rare attribute to find in a player his size. Some have referred to Dach’s shot as weak or below average, however, I find his shot to be a non-issue.
8. Dylan Cozens, C, Lethbridge (WHL)

Cozens game is defined by a diverse skill set in combination with incredible skating ability. Standing at 6’3”, 185 lbs, it’s rare to see a player with both the skating ability and size Cozens has, which makes him a nightmare for opposing defenders to contain. In full stride, Cozens is like a locomotive as he barrels down the wing or picks up speed through the neutral zone, as he can either blaze around defenders on the outside or go through them in order to gain zone entries and offensive opportunities. Offensively, Cozens skill set favors that of a goal scorer, as his shot receives high-end marks due to his ability to beat goaltenders with hard and well-placed shots. While scoring is Cozens’ designated forté, his playmaking ability is well-rounded as well, as he possesses both good vision and crisp passing ability. A competitive two-way player who works hard for loose pucks and plays tenaciously on both the forecheck and backcheck.
9. Cole Caufield, RW, USA U-18 (USDP)

Caufield possesses arguably the best shot of any player that’s come through the draft in the past decade. The way he can get the puck off his stick with a triple threat of accuracy, strength, and quickness of release is truly special and unparalleled in this draft class and will make him a constant scoring threat at the University of Wisconsin next year and eventually at the pro level. Beyond his shot, Caufield excels as a goal scorer due to his ability to find open ice and soft spots in coverage, which speaks to his intelligence as an attacker and how well he’s able to read the play. He’s not a burner, which is a drawback to his game due to his size, however, he can move around the ice freely and easily and was consistently able to keep up on a line with the best skater in the draft in Jack Hughes. A slick puck handler and can corral passes with ease, while occasionally making flashy plays.
10. Matthew Boldy, RW/LW, USA U-18 (USDP)

Skating is the one weakness of Boldy’s game, if you could call it that. He skates fine and generally has no problem getting up the ice, but his pace is nothing special and overall average. Boldy is a gifted puck handler, however, and creates offense using his hands and brain. He possesses the skill with the puck to make flashy plays and beat defenders with slick moves to generate scoring opportunities. He can receive difficult passes in stride with ease, and when he gets the puck he’s always looking to make a play. Boldy’s vision is excellent; when the puck is on his stick he always has his head up looking for an outlet and can regularly find the open man in the offensive zone. Very smart attacker, and rarely works himself into bad turnovers or costly mistakes. Owns a good frame and should only get stronger on the puck with time.
11. Peyton Krebs, C/LW, Kootenay (WHL)

Krebs offensively can be defined as a playmaker. Not the fastest player, but can play the game with a lot of pace and make plays at top speed through the neutral zone. Always has his feet moving and plays with a competitive and tenacious edge, as he’s a relentless forechecker and conscientious defensive player, regularly causing turnovers and maintaining possession for his team. Can be counted on in all key situations for his team, and wants to be a contributor on each shift he takes. Prefers to pass rather than shoot, but owns a capable wrist shot with good accuracy and release.
12. Alex Newhook, C, Victoria (BCHL)

What makes Newhook such a high-end prospect is his elite level speed, and how he uses his brain and smarts to control that speed. Newhook plays the game with a lot of pace; he always has his feet moving and is able to use his feet to his advantage on both sides of the puck. His straight-line speed is high-end, and it allows him to close gaps on puck carriers on the backcheck while being able to quickly turn and put pressure on defenders; is able to make quick cuts to gain the advantage while carrying the puck with regularity as well. Often you see players with elite feet run themselves out of race track and into turnovers, however, that is not the case with Newhook, as he’s smart enough to find holes in the defense with his feet and attack through them. Newhook’s skill level is good, as he’s able to make the occasional flashy play, although I wouldn’t characterize his overall creativity as elite.
13. Philip Tomasino, C, Niagara (OHL)

Tomasino is defined by the pace at which he plays the game. His skating ability is excellent, with a top speed that can beat defenders wide and open up space through the neutral zone, while also being able to shift up and down with quick, agile cuts with ease. Always keeps his feet moving and dares defenders to keep up with him, as he’s not afraid to cut in off the rush in order to put defenders in uncomfortable positions. Tomasino’s hands are high-end and he has a creative mind to match; he’s more than capable of making flashy plays on defenders to open up space or make smooth, slick moves to beat netminders. Dual-threat as a playmaker and goal scorer, as his vision is very good while also owning a good shot with a lightning quick release. He’s a little light for his current 6’0” frame and in turn, can lose board battles at times to larger opponents, so gaining strength will be a priority for him.
14. Philip Broberg, D, AIK (Allsvenskan)

Broberg is a 6’3”, 203 lb bull of a defenseman, who also happens to be one of the best skaters in the draft. It’s rare to find not only a player his size that can move the way he can but a defenseman that can move the puck with the speed and power that Broberg can. He’s fast, smooth, and has an excellent first step that allows him to get going off a standstill in a hurry. The transition game is where Broberg excels, and his ability to move the puck is the biggest selling point of his game. Consistency is the biggest glaring issue for Broberg; some nights he’s pushing the pace of play with his skating and making clean breakups in his zone, while others he seems tentative and makes poor reads and decisions. When Broberg is on, he’s a game changer, and it’s a matter of getting him to that level of play on a consistent night-by-night basis.
15. Arthur Kaliyev, LW, Hamilton (OHL)

For my money, Kaliyev is the 2nd best goal scorer in this draft only behind Cole Caufield, which isn’t a hot take considering his 51 goals this season. Kaliyev’s shot is elite and among the best amongst his peers; the velocity he can get off a standstill is impressive and makes him a perfect trigger man on the powerplay. His accuracy isn’t on par with Caufield, but his shot is just as heavy if not more. His pace is just average, and in turn, you won’t often see him go coast-to-coast on a team, but that isn’t to say he isn’t skilled. His skill level is very good, as he’s capable of making flashy plays from a standstill and uses his hands to change angles on goaltenders before releasing his shot. His shot draws a lot of attention from defenders, and in turn, he has the vision to burn defenses for cheating by finding a teammate with a tape-to-tape pass.
16. Victor Söderström, D, Brynäs (SHL)
